  • Business resource expo is March 20th

    By Steve Althouse 3/15/2012 2:27pm

LVEDC is partnering with the U.S. Small Business Administration to present the Lehigh Valley Lender Match and Business Resources Expo. This is a free-of-charge event that will be held on Tuesday,  March 20th from 5 to 9 p.m. at the ArtsQuest Center at Steelstacks, 101 Founders Way, Bethlehem. The event will allow entrepreneurs a series of 10-minute periods to pitch their financing needs to a variety of lenders in one-on-one meetings. Lenders interested in working with a prospective borrower will then schedule a follow-up meeting where a more-detailed interview will occur. At this time, the respective bank’s loan process will begin. The intent of this Lender Match Program is to enable interested borrowers to quickly meet with a number of lenders to gauge interest in their project.  The Event’s Business Expo will include business resource displays and networking opportunities. John Kingsley and Judy Yanega from LVEDC’s Loan Division will be at the event to help with any questions you may have. • KIZ’s DynAccess set to launch monoski equipment for disabled skiers

    By Steve Melnick 6/29/2011 3:51pm

The Southside Bethlehem Keystone Innovation Zone (SBKIZ) is a critical component of our region’s economic development future. The program specifically builds knowledge-based companies and cultivates entrepreneurship in the designated KIZ zone in Southside Bethlehem. We’re able to do this by bringing together the combined resources of educational, private business, commercial lending institutions and public-sector entities. One of the most recent success stories is DynAccess Limited. Having received a KIZ grant for innovative research projects, DynAccess is planning to launch high-end monoski equipment for disabled individuals. “We studied existing products, used advanced engineering, superior materials and hardware, and developed our own version,” says Chiharu Tokura, president of DynAccess. The protoype is made of TIG-welded chromolly steel with a thermoformed bucket seat. All parts for the chromolly frame are CNC machined and welded locally. The bucket seat in which the skier is firmly seated can be purchased, but DynAccess opted to develop their own. DynAccess is already working with Lehigh University to develop a carbon fiber model. Thanks to the KIZ internship grant program, DynAccess was able to fund an intern student working on a carbon fiber model this summer. “Eventually we want to make extremely lightweight carbon fiber equipment,” Tokura says. Carbon fiber has many advantages, including lightness and strength, although it requires extensive engineering knowledge and experience. With temperatures sizzling thoughts about skiing aren’t tops on most people’s minds. But DynAccess is thinking snow in June. For testing on the slopes the company is working with Brian Kaplun, a former mechanical engineering student at Lehigh University, who is now with Lockheed-Martin. An accident left Mr. Kaplun parapelgic. “Brian is an amazing skier who easily slides down any slope I would ever attempt,” Tokura notes. “It is truly fascinating to see him ski in a monoski.”

  • Entrepreneurs take note

    By Steve Althouse 5/3/2011 2:30pm

It’s not easy starting out as an entrepreneur. For one thing you’re probably tight with cash and high on responsibilities. Not to mention your living room can’t double as your “world headquarters” forever. The Allentown Economic Development Corporation, one of LVEDC’s partners, wants to change that by offering high-tech communal entrepreneurship that will foster a community of innovators who can prosper collectively and individually. AEDC is opening a new communal working space at its Bridgeworks Enterprise Center at 10th and Harrison streets.  Check out more here.
